Beer Me.

Beer and I have a unique and troubled relationship.  I love it. I find it hearty, refreshing, and downright gluggable.  It is unique in its exceptionally multi-faceted nature.  Beer can be heavier than any monster cab yet lighter than the breeziest of Pinot Grigios.  In my very humble opinion, while untrue for nearly any other beverage, there is a beer out there for everyone.  Unfortunately, beer gives me hideous hangovers, perilously low blood sugar, and a truly spectacular case of heartburn…thus our on again off again passion filled trysts followed by tormented endings.

Mahrs Brau Christmas Bock

I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I most definately do not prefer Dos Equis.

However, at 30 I have finally found a happy medium: I do not drink beer often but when I do, I go low brow (icy cold Kirin or Coors Light on a hot day) or snottily erudite and pretentious (Trois Philosophes, Chimay Blue, etc.).  I recently had the pleasure of receiving a bottle that fell comfortably in the latter category and I was thrilled!

Mahr’s Brau Christmas Bock was something with which I was entirely unacquainted and therefore extremely excited to try.  Upon opening and pouring, the nose was fresh and light with hints of citrus, white flowers, and coriander.  The flavor was mild, lightly hopped, and slightly bitter.  The most surprising element: a lack of surprise.  It was tasty and beerish but nothing about it grabbed me.  It was completely inoffensive and pleasant, rather unlike the bocks I had previously experienced.  My first inclination was to liken it to a high quality Heineken, a lovely drinking experience, perfect for someone looking for a holiday beer but generally turned off by heavy winter styles.

This would be a sensational beer for a classic fondue or raclette style meal. If you’re looking for an unconventional holiday beer that pairs just as well with a summer barbecue as it does a fire on a cold winter night, look no further than Mahr’s Brau Christmas Bock. How you deal with the heartburn and hangovers is up to you.
