Can Budweiser make a decent beer?

Budweiser is the king of beers.

Depending on your opinion of cheap American-style lager, it may be the king of watered down moose urine masquerading as beer, however, it’s presence in the American beer universe is undeniable. Almost any bar in the United States that serves beer will serve the Anheuser-Busch flagship. Because of its ubiquity, Budweiser tends to dominate discussion of Anheuser-Busch, however, the brewery has a number of new offerings in the Budweiser line. Some of them (Bud Light Lime, Chelada) are an insult to the general idea of brewing – anyone who says they like Budweiser Chelada, even in an ironic sense, should be elbowed in the crotch – but a few represent (somewhat) legitimate attempts to make a decent beer.

Budweiser American Ale

A pretty good beer

In an effort to see whether the fine folks at Budweiser could make a malt beverage that deserves a spot at your next barbecue or evening alone watching Grey’s Anatomy (hey, we’re not judging), a couple of our friends brought over a six-pack of Budweiser American Ale and we gave it a spin.

And it was… not that bad.

American Ale has a beautiful golden amber color, reminiscent of an Irish Red Ale. The flavor is exceptionally smooth from start to finish, but somewhat lacking in body, much like most offerings from Anheuser-Busch. It has a subtle caramel maltiness that is well balanced with a light hoppy finish. What it lacks in punch and complexity it makes up for in refreshment. It would pair very well with a summer barbecue, chili, hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausages.

If you can’t stand American domestic beers, Budweiser American Ale is unlikely to change your opinion, however, it represents a clear step in the right direction for Anheuser-Busch.

Our overall feelings were encapsulated perfectly by a post-sip interchange between our friends.

Friend 1: “It’s a very good beer.”
Friend 2: “I think the ‘very’ is a little excessive.”
Friend 1: “I think it’s pretty good.”
Friend 2: “Pretty good, I can live with.”

That, my friends, is Budweiser American Ale. It’s a pretty good beer.
